This is the email I was forwarded about the gathering tonight in front of 47 East 3rd Street. I tell you my thoughts and I give you links to read on the story of the tenants of 47 East 3rd Street. (See bottom for link to podcast of my poem "Stuy Town Buy Town affordable housing oxymoron". There is a link on my youtube cover page to hear me confront the mayor on the John Gambling show in which I said NYU is megadorming the East Village to death and I talked to him about the rise in evictions.

You will never see mayor Bloomberg standing up for New Yorkers being evicted ever. I have never seen him do so. He is most concerned with NYU student housing and cleared the way with Amanda Burden for the tear down of St. Ann's from 1847 for yet another hideous NYU mega dorm.

Come to a Press Conference today to limit personal use evictions!!!

Today, Thursday, Feb. 19th at 5 pm, Senator Dan Squadron is holding a press conference in front of 47 East 3rd Street in Manhattan (between 2nd and 1st Ave.) to announce that he is introducing legislation in the NYS Senate to limit personal use evictions to 1 apartment per building. The NYS Assembly has already passed this legislation. Now it's up to the Democratic controlled Senate to do the same.

Currently, the rent laws allow landlords to take 1 or more apartments for personal use. The NYS Court of Appeals upheld a lower court ruling that 1 or more means an unlimited number of apartments, so that a building owner could ultimately decide to evict their entire building (be it 10 apartments or 60 apartments) to turn the building into their personal mansion. The 9 remaining tenants of 47 E. 3rd St., after a 5 year legal battle against personal use mass eviction, will have to vacate their apartments by August 31, 2009 because of our inadequate tenant protections.

Come to the Press Conference to show your support for this urgently needed legislation! If this personal use loophole is not closed, no tenant in a rent stabilized apartment will be safe from mass eviction.

In solidarity,
The Staff of the Cooper Square Committee

Here is an another example of New Yorkers fighting for affordable housing...

This week from the West Side Neighborhood Alliance:

WHAT ITS GONNA TAKE TO WIN REAL RENT REFORM

On Feb. 2nd, the NY State Assembly stood up for affordable-housing and passed the repeal of vacancy decontrol and other pro-tenant bills. Now its time for the Senate to act!

If we overturn vacancy decontrol, this will be the singular biggest victory for New Yorks tenants in 30 years. The stakes are high and the landlord lobby is moving aggressively to kill this critical piece of legislation.

We need you. This might be our only chance to save hundreds of thousands of affordable apartments from being permanently taken out of rent-regulation. Were only going to win if we stand together and show our Senators that we mean business. This battle will be won or lost in the coming weeks.

Can you join us at either of the following events this week?

Calling on senators to support vacancy decontrol repeal
