UTICA, N.Y. - Utica City Court Judge Gerald Popio ruled there is enough evidence to send the case against 20-year-old Willie Reed to a Grand Jury. The felony hearing was held Friday afternoon.
27-year-old Ambrose Smith was killed in the early morning hours of November 29th outside of Spilka's bar in Utica. Prosecutors called several witnesses including Ambrose's girlfriend, 25-year-old Jamie Farda who was with Smith when it happened.
Farda says Smith and Reed got into an argument inside the bar then the two went outside where Smith was found stabbed numerous times in his chest and in his leg.
Farda says she and her boyfriend and another couple stopped by Spilka's for a late night drink.
The foursome entered the bar and behind them came two young males, one of them, Willie Reed. The six were all getting along, then smith and reed started arguing.
Reed was also wounded and was taken to St. Luke's Hospital. Utica Police Investigator David Kaminski testified that Reed gave police a statement and signed it, stating he had brought the knife to the bar with him. The knife was recovered at the scene. It's the same knife police say the bar's owner told them he saw in Reed's hand.
Reed's public defender did not call any witnesses on his behalf.
Prosecutors will now present the case to a grand jury within the next 45 days.
