To grow an avocado tree from a seed, gently insert toothpicks on three sides of the avocado pit, place it in a cup of water so that the bottom of the pit is sitting in water, and wait for roots to develop. Transfer the rooted avocado pit to a pot with soil and gravel using instructions from a sustainable gardener in this free video on gardening.
you need a germinator for them to fruit

My mother put thr seeds in water all the time and only had a little luck getting them to sprout. I attempted the water idea for years with little to no luck. So, I just started to push the seed down into a planter and voila! I have about and 80% sprout rate with about 50% of these turning into growing trees. Not too much water and in warm weather for sure. I prune at about 20 inches tall. Good Luck!
