Poor, poor Hiro. I suffered the human equivalent of this in my lumbar spine. It was horrific. I have no doubt Hiro was suffering immensely, and although I'm sure it breaks your heart til this day, you did the kindest thing.

Could this be on a par with MS in people?

Nooo! He was too pretty to die!! That sucks :( I'm sorry for your loss. Did the people you got him from know he had this condition? Did they lie to you and pretend he was fine? I hate people that do that.

sometimes babies are so awkward hard decisions to make, but if they are falling all the time and hurting themselves then I can understand. Some treatments have been successful

@julie710 if the case was not too severe there might have been something we could have done...but only after a couple of days he got even worse to the point he could hardly make his way up a slight incline. His front hooves become sooo worn down as he tried to take all his weight on his forehand. :(. No yearling should ever have to go through what Hiro did...the only other choice would have been to stable him for the rest of his life...but thats no life for a horse :(

It is very simular in the way it effects the spinal cord and sending messages to the extremities. Wobblers - In this case - was compression by the cervical vertebre and that compression wasn't allowing the singals to sent properly to his hind quarters. In Hiro's case it was a developmental problem, his spine wasn't growing in accordence with his spinal cord. Where MS (I think) the body's immune system attacks its own myelin, causing disruption to messages being sent to and from the brain.

From his postmortem, the lesions have been there for quite some time. It was no one's fault, just bad luck and a shame that such a magnification animal had to be put down :(... I have this up for any one looking up Wobblers as this is the first time i have come across it. I hope that even though Hiro is gone, he will still be able to help others.

Thanks for your kind words... he was too beautiful to die.... The stud i bought him from didn't know about his condition and were very kind and refunded the money I paid for him, plus helped with the vet fees. They loved him just as much as I did. The vet suspected that because he was living on such flat land his spinal cord was able to cope (hence why there was no sign of it prior to purchase), but then the transport and hilly land set off the clinical signs.
