Consonant gradation in Finnish

Some consonants and pairs of consonants often appear in strong and weak "grade" in open and closed syllables respectively.

Here are some of the most common examples. This is not a complete description of gradation in Finnish.

HINT: There is an article about Consonant Gradation in the English Wikipedia, which may provide some additional light on the subject.

  • apuaaa!! voitteko auta minua??

    (hän odotta kolmanteen/kolmantaan lastaan)

    kumpi on oiken kolmanteen tai kolmantaan?????

  • "She's expecting her third child" would be "Hän odottaa kolmatta lastaan". "Kolmanteen" means "into the third", "Kolmantaan" is nonsense.

    Kolmas = third (indicative)

    Kolma|tta = third (partitive)
