Coming Together, Part 1 is an experimental and improvisational peice conceived by Frederic Rzewsi. It is set to text from a letter written by Sam Melville from Attica Correctional Facility in 1971, a few months before he was killed by the government during a prison riot.
Instructions for the piece are to have one person playing a written bass-line, provided by the composer. Rzewski then instructs that other instrumental parts may be improvised, arranged, and added so long as they attack notes at the same time that they occur in the line. Instrumentation was to be decided by the performers.
