I sat in the car and stared at his house for a while. "Selena," Nick said, trying to get my attention. I sighed and unbuckled my seatbelt. I glanced at Mia's sleeping face and unbuckled Mia's seatbelt, too. After lifting her carefully out of the seat, I cradled her in my arms. She stirred a bit, but continued sleeping peacefully. Nick waited for us and locked his truck as we made our way up the walk. My heart was beating quickly and I felt like I was going to explode at any second. He eased the front door opened and I could practically taste the lasagna in the air. Nick smiled and called out to Denise. "Mom! I have a surprise for you," Nick said.
Denise made her way over and squealed when she saw me standing there. I gave an embarrassed smile and I saw her eyes lower toward Mia's face. Her face softened. "And who is this cutie?" Denise whispered. "This is Selena's sister Mia," Nick said. Denise smiled and caressed her tiny cheek. "She's adorable! I'm so glad you two could come. It's a good thing we didn't get rid of any of your baby stuff," Denise said to herself. "I'll have Joe bring it up. You two just make yourselves comfortable in the living room.
Nick led us to the couch and I laid Mia down so her head was resting on a pillow. She squirmed for a minute before she opened her eyes. Her eyes scanned the room before they landed on my face. Her face lit up and she reached for me. I pulled her into my arms and pulled her jacket off, handing it to Nick. He walked over to the foyer and put it on a rack along with mine and the rest of his family's. I watched Mia look around when suddenly her face lit up. I glanced up and saw Nick walk into the living room. Mia squirmed in my arms and reached for Nick. I frowned slightly, but handed Mia over.
Nick took her and played with her on the floor in front of me. "Who's-" I heard behind us. I looked up and saw Joe walk into the living room. His face lit up when he saw me. "Selena! I haven't seen you in forever!" Joe exclaimed while pulling me into a tight hug. I instantly felt uncomfortable, I hated it when people touched me, let alone hug me. But this was Joe and he was just friendly. So, unwillingly, I hugged him back. When I pulled back, I noticed Nick watching me. I know he was thinking about my reaction when he had touched me the other day, and wondering why I hadn't acted the same way with Joe. It's simple. Joe wasn't the one who betrayed me. Or raped me for that matter. Joe was Joe. And I knew he wouldn't hurt me.
"How are you?" Joe asked, glancing down at Mia for a minute. "Uhm, fine." I lied. It was terrible, actually. "Good," he hesitated. "Who's that?" I cleared my throat. "My sister," Joe smiled down at her. "She's a cutie," he said, reaching down and petting her head. Mia froze for a few seconds before continuing to play with Nick's fingers.
"Dinner!" Denise called from where I guess the dining room was. We made our way into the dining room and waited while Joe got a high chair. When he came back with it, we placed Mia in the chair and sat down to eat dinner. Dinner was uneventful. They asked me numerous question and I tried my best to answer them honestly. When dinner was over, I insisted that I go home so I could get Mia to bed and start on my homework. "Well, you must come visit us again, Selena! It was great seeing you," she smiled sweetly.
"Thank you for having me,' I said quietly while putting on Mia's jacket and gloves. "Please stay in contact Selena," Denise begged. "I will," I lied. I probably won't be coming back here ever again. I said my goodbye's and walked down to Nick's car. He followed me to his car and surprised me by opening the door. I narrowed my eyes at him but didn't say anything.
The ride home was quiet and I was practically shaking in my seat with nerves. "Are you cold?" Nick asked, staring at my shaking form. "No, I'm fine." I said. He turned the heat up anyway. When we pulled into my drive way I had a problem swallowing the huge lump in my throat. "Do you want me to walk you up?" Nick asked.
No.. I'd rather go in alone. Thanks for dinner and for paying for Mia's coat." I said, unbuckling Mia's seatbelt and pulling her out of the seat.
"I'll see you tomorrow," Nick said.
I just hope I'm alive tomorrow.
