Andersen's fairy-tale of the "Snow Queen" had already been filmed several times. In 1986, the Finnish director Päivi Hartzell attempted a modern interpretation of the old story as a fantasy film full of brilliant images and sounds before the background of Finnish Lapland's winter landscape.
