Holy early Mean Streets Batman.
-
Unbelievable! This is about as early as it gets when it comes to Van Halen recordings.

They should have revamped this song instead of that Tattoo crap.

Great riffs. Would love to see this come back in a new song.

Where the hell is the backbeat? All i hear is Eddie's guitar, very little of Mikey (That's always been a problem with VH!) and Dave's vocals. Alex must be out drinking or somethin'
-
@Mysterwright No. Mammoth was formed by EVH (guitar/ vocals), AVH (drums) and Mark Stone (Bass). Mark got fired and was replaced with Mikey. Dave joined and took over for vocals. Then they changed their name to Van Halen. Maybe Randy was in a different called Mammoth, but not the one EVH was in.

@mountainskys I doubt Randy was.....but he would have been 18, think he was born in '56
-
@Gordfozzfoster Eddie did mention in a an interview last year he wanted to call the band Rat Salad after the Sabbath song
-
@Mysterwright Randy would have been VERY young IF he had been born yet. ;).

1974? Eddie was all of 19 here. It's funny that he was still a couple of years away from being discovered, and you listen to this now and realize there was NO ONE playing like this in 1974. He was really already better than anyone out there.

@kchamz almost the same solo note for note as mean street. There are many tapes being leaked out here. Some mislabelled though. There's Mammoth, Red Ball Jet and Ratt Salade being called "Van Halen".

Great shit!
I have this on a bootleg. The notes say it was recorded at Cherokee Studios in 1974. It's possible Mark Stone is on the bass, but nobody knows for sure.
