"I am fearful when I see people substituting fear for reason."

The Day The Earth Stood Still - the original, now - is clearly a science fiction staple. It's so iconic that you'll know half of what to expect before you ever watch it. The interesting thing about it, among sci-fi classics, is that it doesn't really spend all that much time on the science fiction elements. Much of the film is spent with Klaatu dealing with regular people on an intensely personal level, and I think that really gives it an emotional heft that most alien movies don't have.

It's also, of course, an important movie that not only is quite truthful about the state of humanity, but also tells a lot about the time it was made. Klaatu's ultimatum to the people of Earth puts one in mind of mutually assured destruction, at the height of the Cold War. Michael Rennie did a wonderful job portraying a visitor from another world, keeping his speech from sounding like rhetoric.

I chose the song because, apart from being haunting at times and generally fitting the genre, it has both stretches of melancholy and of chaos. I find this to be quite a regretful, plaintive movie with a small glimmer of hope, in the people Klaatu befriends during his time here.

  • A nice tribute to a great movie. Wish the remake was as good but falls short on SO many levels. A shame this doesn't end with the complete parting speech which 60 years after it's making contains a message that is possibly more valid today than it was then. If we had a Gort around today, maybe the planet would be a better place ... for sure we'd likely be rid of over half the politicians and hopefully all the ambulance chasing style lawyers!

  • wonderful work !

  • Excellent. Thanks!
