On June 23, 2011, the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) opened a new massive sewage holding tank in South Boston. The 2.1-mile-long tank under Day Boulevard will temporarily store up to 19 million gallons of waste water that would otherwise overwhelm the sewer system when it rains, sending untreated sewage into the harbor off South Boston and Dorchester. The dirty water collected in the holding tunnel will be pumped to the Deer Island Sewage Treatment Plant once storms pass.
