On the evening of Aug 21, 2011 I took a drive after filling up the tank to demonstrate "hyper-miling" on my Honda Insight LX 2010 hybrid vehicle. This demonstrates the power of optimal driving combined with a hybrid electric drive train. I was able to achieve near 70 MPG over a sustained drive around north metro Buffalo, in the Niagara region here in NY. This is the first video, I also took another video later on during the drive.

In order to hypermile, I performed the following tasks:

*Turned off all A/C functions, which was easy given it was a cool rainy day in this example
*Accelerated very slowly, and made sure I stopped equally as slowly to give the batteries maximum recharge and keep fuel usage at a low
*Monitored my driving, using the Insight tools in the LCD screen to ensure that I didn't hit the gas pedal too much during continuous driving

  • No mods, just very careful driving with no a/c turned on. It was a rather cool rainy day, so was able to make extra miles by turning off a/c. Also, I find that a "pulsating" driving pattern where you pull back off the accelerator anytime it drops below 50mpg on the active monitor works well, but accelerate when you get the chance. I have to be honest, in order to get above 50mpg you really have to accelerate in slow/unsafe ways for normal driving conditions, I normally get 45mpg in my Insight.

  • Did you do any mods to your car? I can rarely sustain +50 mph speeds with such low rpm and high instantaneous mpg as you're getting, unless I'm going downhill of course ... is your car CVT or manual?
