How disconcerting would it be if you found your home in a state like this? The people speaking in creepy monotone, the village is virtually abandoned, and the world seems devoid of color somehow.
When the guards stare at you as you walk by, that's the worst part.

@FourSwordsLord I know what you mean. I don't get it either though. Visual cue that the Apple's power is in effect I guess?
Maybe it's symbolic of the "illusion" that Al Mualim speaks of - clouding people's minds and blinding them to the truth. That being the Apple is the source of all the madness and the Old Man is actually a betrayer.
