One of my absolute all time favorite records from my collection of thousands.

My first copy of this I found for 25 cents in a giant bin of 45's. I bought it only because it was a 7" 78RPM record with microgroove pressing. Record fans know that this is a very odd combination of things to have on a record. Later research would show it was from the Bell records corp, who made these records that sold for $0.39 originally. When i got home and spun this record, it blew my mind. I have bought many MANY records in my time, often buying them blind as I did with this one, and had never had my mind blown like did when I heard this.

A friend bought a CD of Artie's with this track, but it was not the same. A different take, a different mix, and a different middle portion (the breakdown part). It has to be THIS track, from Bell Records # 1023-A.

I had this on Youtube before, but it was a video of it on a record player which did no justice to the sound.

This past weekend, I found another copy of this record at a record show for $3.00 that was all but perfect compared to my first, so I did a full MP3 recording of it and wanted to share it here with you all.

I hope you enjoy this song, which I have seen spelled online and on the label as Besame, Bésame, and Besamé Mucho. Regardless, Its the best rendition of this classic song by the most amazing clarinetist of all time, Mr Artie Shaw.

  • So, is this a 7" pressing?

Reason I ask is that I just snagged a 10" pressing of Bell 1023 last month while in New Orleans last month - the first 10" Bell pressing I've ever seen and it's part of Artie's last sessions to boot.

"Besame" has always been a favorite from Artie's last - and self-produced - sessions. I plan to post it here in the very near future. ;)

  • @SwingMan1937 Yup...little 7", but 78RPM and micro-groove...not standrd groove like most 10" 78's Congats on the find, cant wait to see it/hear it. If I ever see any copies of Artie/Besame...I'll buy them. Golden recording. Having spare copies would be a good thing.!

  • I got this record and I'm pretty proud to have it in my collecton!

Thanks a lot for share it on YT.

  • @OLDSCHOOLNEVERDIES Glad you have a copy! So wonderful, and you are quite welcome.

  • I suppose my knowledge of English fails me, but if the other copy of the record you found was 'all but perfect compared to [the] first', why did you do the full MP3 recording of the second one and not of the first one? I really don't mean to be a wisecrack - I rather hope to dig deeper in the mysteries of English or vinyl recordings OR RATHER BOTH

  • @gidolf You've misunderstood. This video IS of the copy I fouind that is nearly perfect. The first copy I had was very poor, so this new copy looked perrfect compared to the old one. Perhaps I worded it poorly, but thats what it is meant to mean..

  • @78Revolutions Yeah, the label on my copy says "For best results use L.P. needle", but it actually sounds a bit worse that way, so mine must be standard groove.

  • where can i get the sheet music for this?! I would love to play it for my performance! :)

  • @gwilll2006 Hey hey, Will! Yes indeed, It was will who bought the artie CD I referenced in the description, which he bought after hearing my first vid of this record.
