Owetu was one of the resident lion cubs seen on a daily basis by visitors to the park and the resident employees/volunteers. In this video he is between 5 and 6 months old.
Lions are very dog-like in their nature when you compare them to most cats but when it comes to water they generally hold cat-like opinions about it. That's why it was a pleasant surprise to see Owetu playing in the water and also why the other cubs were hesitant about him coming near or getting in with him.
Elbows - These water "pockets" form on their own as a means of protecting the joints of the lions legs. They don't occur for every lion but they are normal and do not indicate illness or infection.
In October of 2010 I spent two weeks volunteering at The Lion Park in South Africa. The Lion Park considers itself neither a zoo nor a reserve. There is more care and keeping of their animals than most zoos but there is also a bit more containment than most reserves. The Lion Park is an extremely humane and caring place for these animals to live and they are treated with the utmost respect and constant nurture. This video was captured out of pure coincidence.
