Me using the same old racer to test new AI ideas. The old Subaru and Skoda are set to have a low level of grip and the AI can handle this now. Work needs to be done to allow the cars to get out of crash situations but tackling a corner isn't a problem for these guys anymore.

Having AI cars powerslide is visually more pleasing than a simple "take the corner cleanly" especially in an arcade racer.

I'm now looking at ways to get this onto the Iphone- even if it's a simplified version. The current data files contain enough to run the sim in any physics engine and the more I tweak the code the more of it ends up in scripts instead of Blitz code

  • This looks interesting! I don't know if you've addressed this but one thing that all racing games muck up is racing AI - i.e. if I have the racing line don't turn into me! Gran Turismo, PGR, TOCA Race Pro, Forza, all of them suffer from this! Very frustrating especially if you're including penalties for contact (I'm looking at you, GT5!).

  • Ye!, This is exaclty why I started working on my own racing AI. the cars have three choices - Spline (not usually enabled, but if the cars completely fuck up it kicks in so they can return to the track), Wall distance tracking, and car distance tracking.

Usually avoiding car collisions is top priority, so if you're in front they SHOULD never drive into you . The AI used to be very good but the new physics engine messed it up and it's now being reworked on.

I intend to show how to do it :-D

  • BTW- the above is with the highest level of aggression, i'm making sure the cars can handle skidding round corners and compensate then recover. the skoda's doing a good job above, the subaru not so much. :/

  • Kickin' rad damien

  • Cheers dude.

  • This is looking good... I like racing games where the AI cars can also make mistakes and be involved in crashes even without help of the player! TOCA had this feature too if I remember correctly.
