Pope John Paul II came to Phoenix in September of 1987. I managed to capture this film when he was leaving.
In fact, I shook hands with him! It happens at about 1:26 into the film. I breifly shut off the camera, reached through the line of dignitaries (including Rose Mofford, future governor of Arizona -- whose silver, pearl-studded beehive can be seen blocking the view). Anyway, the Pope glanced at me, took my hand and squeezed it firmly. Then I resumed filming.
It was one of the happiest days of my life, like a little blessing from my own father who had died exactly one year before. My life has been blessed, ever since, by a string of miracles that came through this man and future saint.
the pope has such an indescribable presence (a good one) that you cannot help but feel deep respect for him. I am not Catholic but I love and respect each and every pope. Long Live Pope John Paul II!

I don't know about the others, but John Paul II radiated the benevolence of the Universe. His hand-shake was like my fathers -- firm, yet softer than anything I have ever known. After that day, quite a few prayers have been answered most spectacularly. I am also not a Catholic, but I know good energy when I see it. Plus, I respect anybody who can work a crowd like this man did!
