In this animated podcast, Siemens Healthcare's Thomas Flohr, Frank Sarfeld and Andre Hartung talk to Madeleine Armstrong about the Somatom Definition Flash CT scanner, which is said to combine "unprecedented speed with the lowest dose you can see today in any CT scanner". It can scan the entire body in around four seconds, the thorax in 0.6 seconds, and the heart in 0.25 seconds. This means patients do not need to hold their breath during the scan, unlike with previous systems.

  • The whole gantry travels around the bore in 0.28 seconds. With a 78cm bore diameter, that means that the gantry travels at 40mph!
