*I do not own this song or the second image. I did take the first picture myself. I just saw that there were not any Ed Kilbourne songs on YouTube and I wanted to share them. Ed Kilbourne's website is: http://www.edkilbourne.com/index.html. There are links there for buying his albums.*
Lyrics (From website mentioned above): SUNDAY SCHOOL IS OVER, TIME TO GO TO CHURCH LIKE A HOMIN' PIGEON FLYING TO MY FAVORITE PERCH JUST SITTIN' IN THE BACK ROW, FAR AS I CAN BE FROM THE PREACHER AND THE CHOIR AND THE INTROIT SUNG IN C I GOT THE SUNDAY MORNING SITTIN' ON THE BACKROW OF THE SANCTUARY BLUES. FROM THIS PLACE I'M SITTIN', I GOT A PERFECT VIEW OF EVERYTHING THAT'S GOIN' ON IN EVERY SINGLE PEW I CAN SEE WHO ISN'T LISTENIN', I SEE WHO FALLS ASLEEP AND ALL THE TIME I'M TALKIN' TO THE GAL THAT'S NEXT TO ME I GOT THE SUNDAY MORNING SITTIN' ON THE BACKROW OF THE SANCTUARY BLUES. I DAY DREAM THROUGH THE SCRIPTURES, THE ANNOUNCEMENTS AND THE SONGS THINKIN' ABOUT THE DANCE NEXT WEEK AND WHO TO ASK ALONG THEN HALF WAY THROUGH THE MORNING PRAYER, I REMEMBER FRIDAY NIGHT THE DATE THAT I HAD WITH THE PREACHER'S KID WAS REALLY OUT OF SIGHT I GOT THE SUNDAY MORNING SITTIN' ON THE BACKROW OF THE SANCTUARY BLUES. JUST THEN THE PREACHER GETS EXCITED, HE STARTS TO TALK REAL LOUD SAYIN' SOMETHING ABOUT SOMEBODY COMIN' BACK ON A CLOUD WHATEVER HE'S A SAYIN' CAN'T APPLY TO ME I HAVEN'T MISSED A SINGLE WEEK SINCE 1953 I GOT THE SUNDAY MORNING SITTIN' ON THE BACKROW OF THE SANCTUARY BLUES. SOME PEOPLE THING THIS GOIN' TO CHURCH IS JUST A WASTE OF TIME TIME THAT COULD'S BE BETTER SPENT ON A COUNTRY CLUB FRONT NINE BUT CHURCH IS NOT A WASTED OF TIME, AT LEAST IT'S NOT FOR ME I EVEN WROTE THIS SONG DURING A DOXOLOGY I GOT THE SUNDAY MORNING SITTIN' ON THE BACKROW OF THE SANCTUARY BLUES. SUNDAY MORNING SITTIN' ON THE BACKROW OF THE SANCTUARY BLUES.

  • I heard Ed twice back in the 80's and he made a huge impression on me and my faith.

  • Ed Kilbourne's music has been a part of my life since I was a teenager! His lyrics have moved my heart in so many ways. This song is fun to hear, but the deeper truth still shouts out at me. You can't go to Heaven just showing up at church! Commitment to Christ is so much deepr than that. A lot of Ed Kilbourne's songs May on the surface seem light natured, but there is quite a lot of deepness in his heart. I play Howard Gray this past week to my youth SS class. Great lessons!

  • Rev. Kent Kilbourne is Ed Kilbourne's brother, Kent was at Aledo UMC but was recently moved to another city here in Texas but for the life of me I cant remember where, Houston maybe?

  • Well blow me away! I wrote this song back in 1974 while I was youth director at Friendswood UMC. One Sunday the Youth Choir sang this in the morning service - from where else.... the back row of the sanctuary! It was great fun! In the late 70's I was in a contemporary gospel group called Michael. We recoded an album and Back Row Blues was one of the songs.

Ed, I like the arrangement. Did we ever meet? I remember a guy by the name of Kent Kilbourne. Where did you hear the song?

  • The youth leader (Roger Delaughter) of Friendswood UMC sang this song around 1975. It was great as Roger started singing and playing the guitar and then the youth group joined in from the "back row". Has the song been passed around or did you know Roger?

  • Ed! Where did you get this song?? I knew the guy who wrote the original version!! We sang it in church one Sunday morning while we were sitting on the back row of the Sanctuary!!
