Underwater Installation

In alchemy, water is a symbol for the unconscious forces within our psyche. This idea is represented by a pool, where things remain hidden below the surface of the conscious mind. Water is also a common theme in many dream interpretations where water is a symbol of emotional turbulence. Ocean tides are controlled by the moon which is a symbol of intuition and the unconscious. Rivers, on the other hand, can represent a journey; either emotional, physical or spiritual. Water presents an environmental metaphor for the internal waters of the soul: emotion spilling over, unconscious escaping, flooding, leaking, dripping, consuming and drowning. I often use water in my work as a metaphor for uncontained emotion. The underwater series shows a female subject flowing through the water. Many images include a red cloth that flows away from the subject and contrasts the blue of the water that surrounds her. The red cloth is symbolic of emotion escaping, following, and in some instances even engulfing and distorting our view of the subject.
