Pedal asist E-bike with an onboard 24volt generation system using an alternator driven with a one to one ratio, by a 2.5 hp engine. Voltage is limited to 34 by the throttle stop on the engine. Not an efficient set-up compared to just driving the bike by the engine alone mechanically, but I do not want to deal with charging batteries or the extreme expense of the best batteies. I guess the max rpm of the engine is around 3000 when throttled up for hills.

Ride sensibly, wear a helmet and bright clothes. Pretend you are invisible on your bike.

  • I thought I would comment on the use of an alternator for use in this or anything else. I think they are about 50 percent efficient- meaning you only get out half of what you put in. In the case of the bike, the engine was at full load going down the street, wheras, now the engine is only at moderate load in the same bike, but 100% gas powered (no alternator or electric drive).

I suspect a real generator would be much more efficient, but they are very heavy. Besides, I now get 120 mpg.

  • The batteries give a depth of reserve umph that the motor alone doesn't give.

I thought of it because I heard the legslature here had passed a e-bike law, while gas bikes still would be non-legal. I wanted it legal but not tied to a charger.

Ultimately, I heard wrong and the bill died in committee -dingbats!

The bike is now a legal moped -licensed, and straight gas powered. Better efficiency too.

I am still using a small scooter motor driven at 1/2 speed to power the lights.

  • Thanks guys, I'm glad you like it. No, motion without the battery. It supplies 12v to the alternator field circuit (tapping power from one of the 2 batteries wired in series), so without the field being energized- no power comes out of the alt.

Hmm, now I will have to look up a chevy volt.

  • I don't understand why it needs batteries if it has a generator. You could lose 50lbs of batteries.

  • i love it great job on the motor bike
