Transcript:

An assumption is an idea that even though it's not explicitly stated, provides a logically necessary link between the evidence and the conclusion of an argument. Most attempts to strengthen an argument involve affirming one of the assumptions, showing the assumption is true or least likely. Assumption = link between evidence and conclusion. Affirming an assumption strengthens an argument. The argument goes, "Consuming a half-cup of healthy nuts per day has been shown to improve the speed at which certain mental tasks can be performed. Therefore, consuming a half-cup of peanuts per day would improve graduate students' performance on exams." This argument depends on two assumptions. The first is that peanuts is kind of healthy nut. If they aren't, obviously, peanuts will not improve graduate students' performance on exams. The second assumption is that the mental tasks helped by nuts will impact graduate students' exam performance. To affirm these assumptions, we just add additional statements that enforce these illicit ideas. For instance, "Peanuts are considered healthy nuts." This would affirm assumption number one. For assumption number two, we would say something like, "The mental tasks whose speed can be increased by eating healthy nuts have an effect on a student's performance on an exam."
