  • That looks like a fairly late model Califone reel to reel....all the ones I have seen have been the Califone/Roberts units from the 60's or so. The speakers are very like those use on califone record players. SOS is probably for sound on sound, for playing back on one channel while recording on the other.

  • yep it is found the manual online. i know what you mean about the speakers i thought it was a record player at first didn't know they even made r2rs.

  • You got a nice reel-to-reel there! Very nice you got it for free never been used! This is similar to I believe the Akai 4000DS model. The head order from left to right are erase-record-playback. Please take good care of this reel-to-reel! You got nice stuff!

  • its actually after looking inside a rebranded akai gx-4000d

  • que bonito aparato. felicidades

  • Sure that it uses the sabe Akai GX-4000 series mechanism.

    Perhaps some electronics difference.

I see 2 buttons on the left. My Akai GX-4000D have only one called "Tape Selector".

I believe that your reel-to-reel is a very rare machine.

  • That's a very nice machine you scored and sounds VG!

  • it's indeed a Akai GX-4000. not a -D since that is a deck (which means that it only has a line-out), this one has a built-in power amplifier. very nice!

you dont have to use the pause and start buttons, you can use the stop/play control directly.

the pause is only handy during recordings, so when you want to stop to get a diffrent track or something you don't have to put it into stop first and then back into record.

  • @recordproducersrule Im pretty sure you can since sos means sound on sound I found out.

  • Nice. Love those schools that have nice equipment. Even nicer, when a student happens to be around in the right time and place, when the get rid of old equipment. You were lucky to be able to get that one,

  • sos is sound on sound

  • You go to a really cool school! :D

  • Very nice. I never have seen this brand, very interesting.

I have one but Akai brand, model GX4000DB (with dolby system) and S.O.S. also.

  • the song is called "Rocky Road". :)
