Violetta Valéry, once a Parish courtesan, is now mortally ill from consumption. After reading a letter that Georges Germont has written her, she is left to despare, although the father Germont says his son will return to her, having only wounded Douphol in the duel, who is now recovering. She is left to doubt his promise of returning, being convinced that her beloved Alfredo has abandoned her and no longer loves her. She sings a heart-wrenching farewell to her serene dreams of the past that have vanished forever. She begs God's forgiveness on her past sins, aware that He will soon take her soul to Him.

Listen to Zeani's heart-wrenching rendition of this Act III aria.

  • Virginia Zeani was a versatile, magnificent singer and one of the greatest Violetttas of all time.

  • How very true! :)

  • What a Violetta! Dramatic and with a Full and rich voice, with so much of sensibility.

Much better than for example Maria Callas. Thanks for this wonderful music.

  • So expressive! In this aria Zeani could make a rock weep!

  • Visually enchanting, vocally bewitching, la Zeani is the crème de la crème! The complete package, from the ability to spin gold with her vocal chords, to arrest a heartbeat with the flick of an eye-lash, and superlative interpretive powers... ah, Zeani is a delicious slice of heaven:

Chilled champagne, fresh caviar, and warm Zeani; I'll bring the halos to the party!!!

Thank you for this iconic, heartrending posting; we are greatly indebted for your generosity.

    Bravissima, Zeani!!!
