Eleven silver balls not far from Afghanistan's border. They are the key to Russia's space shield, an optical-electronic unit called "The Window". Each one is a powerful telescope. They see every object up to 40,000 kilometres from the surface of Earth. "The Window" is run by Russians, but is located much further to the south of Russia's border, in Tajikistan.

tv-idiot detected. too much CNN and Fox News?

  • @Zukhov1945 I don't know much about Russian mountain ranges, but I do know something about telescopes. When placing them, choose a dry place that is at high altitudes and has relatively calm wind. A good spot is very important. I don't think these are to detect a US attack, which would come from the arctic. It's probably to keep track of military satellites.

  • Wait... if this was built to locate and maybe destroy enemy missiles, why is it in central Asia? Wouldn't it have been more smart to place it in Kazan or in the Urals?

  • @ycats1000

It is optical if I understood well...

meaning it literally sees the objects and that's how it detects it...
