  • Brilliant. THE definitive Dracula movie--in large part because it actually follows the book. Nevertheless, Oldman is at the top of his game, and Kilar's score is one of the most easily recognizable soundtracks I know. This movie will always have a place in my heart--it's the first I can ever remember hearing stories of people having to leave the cinema during the film for being uneasy.

  • It's sad that very few people read the book. It's quite fantastic.

  • @xhieron really??? why people fidn this movie so uneasy?? was it fear of embarassement?

  • @waivedwench I have to agree. The added romance, which wasn't in the novel, seriously hurt the film for me. When I watched it, I was hoping for an exact copy of Stoker's novel, which is a masterpiece of literature. Hopefully they'll make it the way it should be someday. I did like this musical score, however.

  • I'm reading the novel now and it's absolutely thrilling! Even through all the "old" english, it's so tense and incredible, especially that whole section in the middle when it goes into detail about everything they did to try and save Lucy. That, so far, is my favorite part.

I also recommend the story "Carmilla," a vampire story by Sheridan Le Fanu, which predates the Dracula novel by 25 years. Considering the central focus of the story, Sheridan was a pretty gutsy writer for his time.

  • @TendancyToFloatAway Yo lo leí y me encantó.

  • @Kikefriki It was the other way around for me. I loved Dracula, but wasn't keen on Frankenstein. But to each their own!! And to be honest, I only went to see BD's Dracula because Gary Oldman was in it!! The soundtrack was good, too.

  • @waivedwench Of course i read the book. And i don´t like it: the second half is awful. "Frankenstein" was awesome but Stoker dissapoint me a lot. Coppola made a MASTERPIECE. Even Hammer films made the story much more interesting!

By the way, this movie IS the romance between Dracula and Mina. It is all about how good became evil and how evil become good. How love never dies. And that things are not in the book that is more a fight between the "holy" victorian values and the sexual freedom.

  • @Kikefriki To me, it is a subplot. I like my books-turned-into-movies to actually to be about the BOOK, not with any frills added. I know the film's makers marketed the love story as the key element, but it was unnecessary thing to do, because "Dracula" is a masterpiece of gothic horror, and there is no love interest between the Count and Mina in the book, if I recall. Adding that actually cheapened the story, IMHO. Have you read the book? If not, give it a try. I'd like to hear your opinion.

  • @waivedwench It´s not a "subplot". The love story is what the whole movie is about.

  • @TendancyToFloatAway its my favorite by far! i cant see how any other can beat it, everything was sooo good about it :)

  • I wasn't too keen on the romantic subplot they added in this movie, but the rest is great because, as xhieron says, it follows the book. Forget New Moon, Twillight and all that stuff, DRACULA is the definitive vampire text!!
