In this video, Betty describes how to make an original recipe from 50 years ago--Best Ever Brownies! Yum! Yum!

Ingredients:

1 stick butter or margarine
(2) 1 oz. squares of unsweetened chocolate
1 cup sugar
1 egg, well beaten
2/3 cup self-rising flour
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup chopped pecans

Melt the stick of butter or margarine along with the 2 squares of unsweetened chocolate in a saucepan over low heat, stirring occasionally. Let this mixture cool to room temperature. To the melted mixture add 1 cup of sugar, 1 well beaten egg, 2/3 cup of self-rising flour, 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract and 1 cup of pecans. Mix all together and pour into an 8 inch by 8 inch baking pan (or dish). Bake at 350 degrees 20 to 25 minutes. Brownies will be done when a toothpick placed in the center comes out clean. Remove cooked brownies from the oven and cool to room temperature. Cut into 16 squares. Place on a serving dish. Go crazy on brownies!!!

i dont have any good quality dark chocolate or baking chocolate available here

i'd like to use cocoa powder instead..how can i substitute chocolate with coco powder and in what proportions?

  • @jojo92692

3 tablespoons + 1 tablespoon of oil = 1 oz. of unsweetened chocolate.

  • Hi how many OZ of of butter is the stick of margarine because they don't sell those sticks in England. Thanks :D Also is milk chocolate ok to use?

  • @Dustycins 1 stick of butter is 4 oz. Yes, you may use milk chocolate, but expect a milder flavor.

  • I'm gonna do this for a bake-off with my friend. I'm gonna use this recipe. But since my friend has a little bit of a sweet tooth but not too much, is it fine I use a little less sugar? I'm using dark chocolate which is like bittersweet or semi sweet and when I made this recipe for my grandma and I used about 1/2 cup, she liked a lot but a lot of people that have a sweet tooth say it's not sweet enough. So, should I use 2/3 cups of sugar or 3/4 cup of sugar?

  • @PurpleLashess You may use less sugar. 1/2 cup is not enough, but either 2/3 or 3/4 cup would be fine.

  • I am gonna do this for a bake off with my friend. Now, I'm using semi sweet chocolate and since my friends and I love sweet desserts but not too sweet, can I use about 2/3 cup of sugar. By the way, should I use 2/3 or 3/4? Please answer question. Thank you.

  • @webkinzluvax3 1/4 cup cocoa powder = 1 ounce, so your will need 1/2 cup.
