the pastoral-sounding bit at 2:00 reminds me of the part in the William Tell overture just before the famous theme, very lovely!

It makes me chuckle how he points his baton like he's casting a spell and it sounds like something blows up, where it's actually the timpani. hahahaahaha

What an odd conducting style.

Who cares how weird it is? What matters is the sound that he produces, which is amazing, somehow he knows how to perfectly balance every single part, even during live performances, to the point where everything is heard with such clarity.

As an orchestra player myself, i can say that it is not the conductor that balances anything for that matter. During rehearsals (s)he can tell how they want it to be played, but the actual balancing is done by the musicians and their well-trained ears alone.

Well yes, of course the orchestra is very well trained, but sometimes if the conductor notices something, he'll tell the musicians to quiet down a little so he/she can hear a certain motive, this can be seen in the video where Salonen is rehearsing Debussy's La Mer with the LA Philharmonic, I think it's also uploaded by this guy, gab1279. Salonen said it's sort of like cooking. You know the ingredients, you just have to try and balance it to what you like best.
