i'm a GTI lover, i once drove a Fahrenheit across the western US, but i just gotta throw this out there... if you ask me the actual "original hot hatch" would be the 1972 AMC 401-XR Gremlin. it had rear wheel drive and a 401ci engine (from the Javelin AMX) and could run the 1/4 mile in under 13 seconds. and that's ten years prior. i know european cars have better handling, but a little credit is due. and you could get the levi's blue denim interior...

If you go for a MK II, I would take the 16 valve engine.
In my opinion, that was the very best Glf GTi ever. ;)
From the front looking, the MK1 and 2 look very simular.
From behind, yes, the MK1 is defenetly the best looking, altough less spacious and less practical. But I believe nowadays, you can get a late mk2 quite cheap, whereas a good MK1 cost classic car money...

as a 17 y/o new driver, should i go for the MK1 Gti or the MK2 Gti?
Insurance costs not a big issue: but are they still v high?

@Snortthesweetener go for the mark 1 because the care hase a better response
mark 2 go for the older ones (mirror in the middel of the door)

the red golf gti ttf341y is my mates..he's owned it from new.
i drove this car years ago...and it made me go out and buy one...now had several mk1 and mk2's
