carsel - Lincoln was a politician - so what. He was trying to stop the insanity and horror of slavery.
He said those who sold slaves should be kicked to death. To say he was against slavery is an understatment - but he had to win election in a time where most Northeners even didnt give a shit about slavery.
So yes, he would focus on saving the Union. But he knew saving the Union was the same thing as ending slavery.

Lincoln was running for re-election, and about to lose. .
His advisors were begging hiim to shut up about slavery. Lincolns enemies were calling him a nigga lover, that he didnt care about the union, just niggas.
Lincoln HAD to respond - by saying, look, Im fighting the war for Union. If Lincoln had NOT said that, McClellan wins and ends the war ---with slavery in tact.
Unless you understand that, you dont understand shit about the situation.

And if he ran on the complete abolition, he probably would have never been elected sooo...He was likely against it but had to find some middle ground.

Everything is half truth from reality

Because he specifically ran on that platform in 1860 when he accepted the nomination for presidency for the Republican party.
