Gil Mellé was a man of many talents. He did paintings, sculptures, cover art, played tenor sax and composed music for over 120 movies. He was the first to compose a main theme for a television series arranged entirely for electronic instruments (Rod Serling's Night Gallery). In the 50's he recorded several beautiful records for Blue Note that more or less seem to have been forgotten and left in obscurity, until Blue Note released a "Complete Blue Note Recordings" set of Mellé's work in 1998. Regrettably this box set is now out of print.
"Sunset Concerto" is from Mellé's debut as a leader, the lush, nocturnal and slightly futuristic cool-jazz 10 inch "New Faces - New Sounds" from 1953. If you happen to find the Blue Note set it's definitely worth getting, especially since it has all the 8 tracks from this overlooked jazz gem.
