The US Senate has passed the National Defence Authorisation Act, which contains a controversial bill allowing so-called terror suspects to be detained indefinitely, without trial.

US President Barack Obama will sign the act into law, according to his administration. But critics say by doing so, the president has reneged on a campaign promise to protect civil liberties.

Al Jazeera's Alan Fisher reports from Washington, DC.

  • If we want change then we as Americans need to get off the couch and do something about it!! I am embarrassed to call myself an American if we allow Bills like this to be passed in Congress!!!!

  • @Hasnolife17 guess u are right, cause i see the same thing happening across the atlantic, the EU has proven to be nothing more than a big union of banks and corporations that doesn't care at all about it's people, with weak political leadership and no vision for the future...

  • @Archavon900 It's not the people's fault. We can do nothing to stop them from passing this bill besides protesting. Although we want to stop this bill if congress wants it passed it will be passed. Most Americans don't want bills like these to be passed but we can do little to stop it. Don't blame the people whos rights are being taken away. Blame the government taking them away.

  • what is wrong with the people in the us???

  • @THR1LLA115 Wait, almost all members of Congress supported it. I hate that he signed it, but even if he vetoed it, it would have been overruled. Using that word and blaming only him is racist foolishness. Here is the worst part. Since slavery, racism has been used so long in many countries to divide the working class and trick them into supporting policies that are not in their economic interests. Nonsense

  • I can't stop laughing at this stupidity!

America, the land of freedom and opportunity. oh yes...

  • The first people to be put behind bars indefinetly should be the politicians for starters .

  • Racists in U.S. tell immigrants "Go back to your filthy country." Looks like the "filthy" countries are coming to the U.S. It's the end of the world as we know it. Awesome...

  • @THR1LLA115 obama is just a puppet... very well selected and placed .. makes u wonder why they put a black person in place
