http://www.pbs.org/independentlens/asknot As wars rage in the Middle East, the U.S. military is eager for more recruits—unless you happen to be openly gay. ASK NOT explores the tangled political battles that led to the infamous "don't ask, don't tell" policy and reveals the personal stories of gay Americans who serve in combat under a veil of secrecy.

ASK NOT premieres Tuesday, June 16 on INDEPENDENT LENS, a weekly series airing on PBS. Hosted by Terrence Howard, the acclaimed series showcases powerful and innovative independent films. Presented by ITVS, INDEPENDENT LENS is broadcast on PBS stations nationwide. Visit the Web site for more: http://www.pbs.org/independentlens/asknot

  • This was a VERY GOOD film! I am glad I stayed up until 3 am to watch. I hope more people come to comment on this, but I'd like to be the first to say this-if you think DADT should be discarded please speak up.

I voice my opinion- the Don't Ask Don't Tell policy should be removed!

I will forever respect those who served our country and were dismissed.

And for those who disagree, well, I won't argue with you. You have the right to your views and I have the right to mine. Freedom of speech.

  • This policy needs to be eliminated for a whole host of reasons. That being said, the example of NATO forces not falling apart is not the best argument. It has yet to be shown that they could conduct a successful large operation without the U.S. military. How about China and/or Russia?

  • The USA is part of NATO and most NATO forces allow / have gay and lesbian members in them and they haven't fallen apart yet - morale has not declined etc.

  • True but thats the policy makers. I didn't enlist for a career in killing. That statement is a little absurd. Most want to defend this country and get an education, as I did.

  • If the military was for 'Defence' instead of offence it would have a totally different 'ethic' behind it.

Ethics play a huge part in determining 'policies' especially in military establishments. (In fact 'ethics' is almost a dirty word to some of them)

A society that genuinely wants 'Peace' & only 'defends' itself & its allies, will naturally be more tolerant & more likely to accept gays in the defence forces.

Everything is connected.. Frankly I'm surprised you couldn't see the connection.

    ;-)

  • do u mind explaining how that is in any way relevant to this specific video

  • Its long past time the military everywhere was reduced back to the size of a 'DEFENCE' force.

While there are massive industrial complexes committed to killing as many 'foreign civilians' as possible, there will be 'conflicts of interests' which are purely 'profit driven' & NOTHING to do with defending one's nation from attack.

IMO one has to wonder about people who want a 'career' in killing for profit?

Defence is one thing, but there has been a policy of pre-emptive 'offence' for a long time.
