now.. a question ive been wondering, since im looking to get a single action revolver, how is the balance of the ruger blackhawk when compared to an origional 1873? the 1873 model i handled had absolutely the most perfect fit, feel, and balance, how would the blackhawk compare?

Not sure of the 1873 but I have a New model Blackhawk Ruger w/ a 6.5in barrell. Shoots good and even though I can twirl it ok, if you want to get in to the fancy side of twirling, go for a 5 or 5.5in barrell. The Ruger single action is hard to beat.

I think this sends the wrong message to new people. Using live ammo is not safe.

Very true! Being a single action revolver is much safer and notice I'm not performing quick draw with live ammunition. Every time I'm firing, notice the weapon is always pointed down range!

Also, notice every time I'm twirling the weapon the hammer is NOT cocked! Also see that when the weapon is being twirled back into the holster, it is also un-cocked!

NEVER cock a loaded gun unless pointed down range!

@jonjenny your ruger also has a transfer bar making it safer from accidental fire as well. unlike my colt

@stchman the ruger has a transfer bar not saying yea this is safe to do but this gun can accidentally go off like a colt. this is also why is thumbing and fanning seems slow cause he has to re pull the trigger after he cocks it

anyone who thinks this is not safe and is a stupid idea either has no idea what a Single Action Revolver is or they just suck at twirling it...because I do this all the time and have never once shot myself...but thats because I understand guns and I know what I'm doing.

Im in to firing and twirling six guns myself, and if I decide to twirl when live ammo is involved, its always when re-holstering after all rounds were fired. Still not perfectly safe, but twirling before firing makes me nervous...

Unlike some folks on here, I actually grasp the concept of a SA being safe to flip around like that (as long as the hammer isn't cocked). However, that being said ... you're a braver soul than I am to be doing that with live ammo. Clumsy as I can be, I could totally see myself accidentally snagging the hammer somehow and blasting myself in the foot or something... <8-O

@jonjenny Well you should be careful when you're using live ammunition. I like twirling stuff though, but it should be done with empty revolver or, at least, blank. Imo.

@stchman It is impossible for it to fire until he actually cocks the hammer, which is done after the fancy moves. So it is pretty safe :)
