Well, vedic mathematics may seem to be 'hocus-pocus' but it really is a set of tricks based on simple algebra to do your arithmetics faster. In practice, I believe that it is better to master the most general method than having to remember tricks for each special case (if you want to get it done fast, buy yourself a calculator). Incidentally, the name 'vedic mathematics' is a misnomer since it is neither mathematics nor does it have anything to do with the vedas.

Just try it, 20 x 17. Draw it now, w/ no line for the zero

2 intersections on the left give 2, so 2 in hundred's place (200).

14 intersections top + 0 at bottom = 14, which in the 10's place = 140.

200 + 140 = 340! Voila!
