its a great song to a great movie

I love this song so much. It bears such strong meaning. I don't like any of Steve Earle's other music and I typically despise country music as a whole, but this is amazing. I'm thinking about getting 'lonely are the free' tattooed somewhere. I really don't like the studio album version, however. I'd love to find a rendition of this without the rain at the beginning.

is this just a C to Em7 with saucy finger picking?
-
is it possible to categorize this particular sound into a certain country (?) subgenre?
really love it

צדקה "the world is broken we have to fix it." quote from movie. good song. sorta Dylany and i REALLY appreciate the lyrics, thanks very much, tomwolff0, nice photos above also.
Happy Succot, good film for thinking about at harvest time, has many unanswered questions, but they are all good ones. Ed Norton's Bill/Brady is a bit like Jekyll & Hyde, music is similar to "O Brother, Where Art Thou" music.
Tim Blake Nelson and Ed Norton are understated partners here, good film & sound track.

"What I want, is for you to give me that equipment and then to go back east with all the other Faggots, that think that New York City is the only place on earth!
Don't you turn your back on me!!!! Don't you walk away!!!!"
(Buddy Fuller/Steve Earle)

@Peterdidit If you finish tabbing the song out I'd be interested in getting a copy of that.
