Steve Earle - Lonely Are the Free

Download the single:

I ripped this straight from the movie itself. This will not be available on any recognized album until a "Leaves of Grass" soundtrack is officially released. This is not my work nor am I claiming credit for it. Enjoy!

Lyrics:

Lonely are the free
'cause there ain't that many of them
they don't walk like you and me

They just tumble in the breeze
lighter than a feather
all together, separately

That's how it's s'posed to be
no matter where they wander
from post to in between,
from here to over yonder,
there's no place for them to land
Lonely are the free

The silent are the strong
not so much as a whisper
tells you anything is wrong

You've known all along,
but you can't help but listen
and now the moment's gone.

It keeps you hanging on
until the stillness signaling
the breaking of the dawn,
is shattered by the sirens
singing sacrificial songs

The silent are the strong.

That's all they used to see
a violent shadow passing 'cross
the sun so fleetingly
that if you have to ask you miss it
(?) you see
Lonely are the free
Lonely are the free

  • @agratex This is folk music.

  • i watched this movie and i loved this song

  • its a great song to a great movie

  • I love this song so much. It bears such strong meaning. I don't like any of Steve Earle's other music and I typically despise country music as a whole, but this is amazing. I'm thinking about getting 'lonely are the free' tattooed somewhere. I really don't like the studio album version, however. I'd love to find a rendition of this without the rain at the beginning.

  • is this just a C to Em7 with saucy finger picking?

  • is it possible to categorize this particular sound into a certain country (?) subgenre?

    really love it

  • Best fucking movie

  • There are NO tutorial vids of this song on YouTube/:

  • צדקה "the world is broken we have to fix it." quote from movie. good song. sorta Dylany and i REALLY appreciate the lyrics, thanks very much, tomwolff0, nice photos above also.

Happy Succot, good film for thinking about at harvest time, has many unanswered questions, but they are all good ones. Ed Norton's Bill/Brady is a bit like Jekyll & Hyde, music is similar to "O Brother, Where Art Thou" music.

Tim Blake Nelson and Ed Norton are understated partners here, good film & sound track.

  • "What I want, is for you to give me that equipment and then to go back east with all the other Faggots, that think that New York City is the only place on earth!

Don't you turn your back on me!!!! Don't you walk away!!!!"

    (Buddy Fuller/Steve Earle)
