This is my all-time favorite acoustic blues piece - by the great Lonnie Johnson. It is played in DGDGBE tuning with the capo on the second fret. He does this to be able to play the bouncy bass that runs through the whole tune. I've learned it the best I can from the original recording and a book by Steffan Grossman. I still can't get through it without making at least one mistake, but here it is anyway.

  • Thanks! I love Lonnie Johnson's playing. I've posted another one of his instrumentals - "Woke Up This Morning" on my channel page. Check out YouTube for videos of him singing and playing - he was a great singer too.

  • Nice playing, always great to hear someone play LJ.

I think you'd come closer to his sound with a thumbpick; you'll get a snappier attack.

  • Thanks! I'll try the thumbpick. I've always wondered exactly how he played.

  • this is great!

  • I just checked out your stuff -- after seeing your version of Blind Arthur's Breakdown. Wow! I'm still working on that song. Thanks!
