A judge apologized for scheduling a murder trial on the one-year anniversary of the crime.
Johnson County Judge Peter Ruddick told Kelsey Smith's family Wednesday that he was unaware of the significance of June 2 when he set the trial date for Edwin Hall.
"Let me say to the Smith family, I had no idea I picked the date of your daughter's death," Ruddick said.
He said he expected to set a new trial date next month for Hall. Lawyers for the 27-year-old Olathe man had requested the change.
The trial is expected to start later rather than sooner. Attorneys will meet next week to try to pick a new date for the trial.
