This makes sense in theory, but the fact is that locally producted items are very very expensive. I guess it's the same in the USA. When you buy shoes please check the prices of italian hand made shoes or suits and compare them to the indonesia's ones. Even italy only rich people can wear italian clothes nowadays. Normal workers have to wear cheap imported items.

i doubt that if you doubled their wages you would reduce profit margin into a loss.

hey i think we should take action, next time i buy any brand that has cheap labour, i'll ask the retailer for details. I feel like an ass. I complain a lot on life, and i feel lilke such an ungrateful pig...i should stop over consuming...neither should many americans out there...

Lizzes, we are ALL victims to this system. We did not ask for this any more than the workers over there did. You are doing the right thing by cutting your consumption and asking questions. Just wanted to point out that on the retail level, the workers (including the manager) are not in any better position to stop this madness than the manufacturing workers. You do best to address the executives rather than ask sales clerks who also live in fear and poverty and really control nothing.

How impressive that all these terrified obeying souls are women.

The idea of buying local seems excellent to me. The problem is that I do not see anything for sale that is locally produced.

Buy used stuff from thrift stores, yard sales and consignment stores. I did all my Christmas Shopping this way and everyone loved their gifts. I am trying to keep my money out of the pockets of the greedy CEO's of large corporations. My eyes opened when I watched "The Corporation". I went to my Grandkids closet and found all their garments were made in these poor countries. I have also cut up my Gap credit card and disconnected cable TV as they, and many others, sponsor programs. Do all you can.
