From the looks of it, I guess they re-animated an ad they did a decade earlier since here's the original (you can spot the differences in the timing and placement of the shots).

The first non violent commercial for the Cheerios Kid and Sue. Written by Alan Snedeker early 1970's

Later in the 80's, they let Sue eat the cereal alongside Kid.
