Little Big Man (USA 1970)
Directed by Arthur Penn
Dustin Hoffman: Jack Crabb
Chief Dan George: Old Lodge Skins
Aimee Eccles: Sunshine
Richard Mulligan: General Custer
Jack Crabb is the only white survivor of the Battle of Little Big Horn and the centenarian shares his story in this picaresque fable of the Old West. In Arthur Penn's adaptation of Thomas Berger's novel, Dustin Hoffman plays Jack from teen years into old age in a bravura performance. And Jack's story is a fantastic one: captured by Indians as a boy, reared as an Indian, shuttling back and forth between the white and Indian worlds. In the process, he befriends everyone from Wild Bill Hickock to George Armstrong Custer and is a gunslinger, a snake-oil salesman, and an Army scout. This is a solid blend of comedy and tragedy, with a strong statement to make about America's treatment of Native Americans without sermonizing. A terrific cast includes Faye Dunaway, Martin Balsam, and Richard Mulligan. But this show is all Hoffman's.

@dukebeatles777 You are an ignorant peckerwood. Any man that judges by an entire country is a fuckwad such as yourself.

it's just cruelly ironic and show just how hypocritical them americans can be. but, then again they're just humans...they're NOT above any of us, NON-americans. they just THINK they are.

it's understandable how all the white settlers needed to DOMINATE the indians, some of em were put there against their will, some were punished to be there, some were trying their luck and have a better life than they did in their own native lands...but, for the U.S., whose ancestors pillaged, massacred, invaded the native americans, to now POLICE and telling other countries (the developed and under developed) WHAT TO DO and lecturing AND sanctioning them for "civil rights abuse"....!!!

This movie is based on the novel "Little Big Man," and although it is a really good movie, it doesn't even come close to the book. The author, Thomas Berger really wrote a terrific story that grabs you and sucks you right in. It's lyrical and really funny. I remember he meets an old prospector who says to him, "If I had your pecuinary endowments sonny, I'd rambunculate northwards, coming back in six months as a man of means beyond the dreams of algebra." A real achievement, and great writing.

@2010cja Well said, my friend and well written. We all share shameful events especially in times of war. My greatest regret is our military withdrawal from Saigon, such dishonor from our government makes me bow my head in shame.

@ninjalanyards Just a thought : Might be unwise to talk too reverently about samurai honour within earshot anyone from Nanking, or Manila, or Korea, or for that matter anyone whose grandad built railways under the Burmese sun. Nations are far too complex to be reduced to a few simple comparisons, and history shows us time and again that no matter where someone's from, there's no guarantee he or she won't brutalise someone whom political expediency has for the moment deemed inferior.

No offence to any American viewers around here, but what the Americans lack is the honor that Japanese samurai have. Yes I would decapitate a person who annoyed me for years and years with a little warning. But attack and entire village of unarmed defenceless people without any form of warning except for an offensive bugle?
That's just lacking in thought and kindness. Americans are just full of patriotism that they forget to be considerate or become a role-model for other nations.
