USA Trains Big Boy pulling lots of Hopper cars.wmv

USA Big Boy pulling (96) 100 ton hopper cars and (20) freght cars for a total of 116 cars. Incredible!! If this was a real train, it would be over a mile and quarter long. The Big Boy didn't seem to strain much pulling these cars, but it would tough to pull any more without adding anymore power. The big problem is weight. All of the cars have been convert to metal ball-bearing wheels and body mounted Kadee couplers. This adds quite a bit of wieght to each car. In fact, it is hard to pull just the cars with your hand! There is also a lot of preasure on the couplers, especially the one at the front of the train. So the situatioin that affects the prototype also affects these G scale trains.

But before I ad any helpers, I am going to try one more time to pull 140 cars. That would be 1-1/2 mile of train in real life! I am also going to be doing a very long double stack train and a long trailer train. I will keep you posted.

What type of couplers are you using on your rolling stock???? Regal

I use Kadee couplers which are the standard for G scale train items. I have also seen Kadee couplers on O scale and HO scale trains. They really work well and I have virtually no problems whatsoever!

Did any of the cars want to tip over when you went around a corner?

@jbhuse These cars are coming off a very sharp S curve. And so yes, there is a tendency for the hopper cars to want to tip over. But if the train is going a constant speed through the S curve and there is even tension on the couplers, the train will make it through with no problem. But I am shocked at how much preasure is on those couplers. If you pull all 116 cars with your fingeers, it is almost impossible!
