I have to agree with you, the horizon is not straight, the image looks indeed washed out and he didn't focus on the eyes, which are out of focus. Composition wise it's also a poor shot, because the spear is distracting and the main object is too centered.

The photo that he choose is kind of bland and the horizon is not level, Tech guys should not be "photographers".It's like all those tech or gear junkies that know everything about new stuff , well what good does that do if you can't use them.
