The introduction music was full of suspense in itself - perfect for setting the scene to the film and it's characters. Rathbone and Bruce were quite simply the best portrayal of Holmes and Watson ever. Basil Rathbone could have convinced you that he WAS actually Sherlock Holmes had you met him in the period, all the actors since ( with the exception of the great Jeremy Brett ) could never have pulled that feat off.
I totally agree with you. It also helps that it was made in a time when b/w movies was common. In my opinion it helped increasing the atmosphere of the movies (esp. for this :-) )
Same goes for the musical bg, which was common for movies of that time .
