Far from insisting that Canadians must stop giving people the thumbs up, this video is using an over-exaggerated example to get a simpler idea across. The negative connotation of this gesture is not as relevant in Iranian society as it used to be, it was just a funny way to show that sometimes misunderstandings happen, and it's good to be aware of the reasons they might arise. PS. We're not advocating that hitting people with a purse is a viable alternative either.

I hardly think that Canadians should have to tiptoe around and give up using the 'thumbs-up' gesture because it means something negative on the other side of the world to a very specific segment of people. This is Canada, and we have our own customs. Shouldn't newcomers learn the Western meaning of thumbs-up so that they can live here and prosper, and not the other way around?
