Cyprus President Papadopoulos loses in 1st Round Election

Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation reports on Cyprus President Papadopoulos having lost by a narrow margin in the cliffhanger 1st round of elections on 17th February, with former Foreign Minister and Euro MP Kasoulides from the right of the political spectrum and House of Representatives President and AKEL leader Christofias, from the left wing, having won equal support from the electorate in the three way race. The next round to determine the new President is to be held on Sunday 24th February. The first round of Presidential elections in Cyprus happens to have been held on the same day 'chosen' by Kosovo for their own declaration of Independence from Serbia -- a stark reminder of the dangers facing Cyprus from the secessionist Turkish-occupied part of Cyprus. Strategies on finding a solution to the problems created following 35 years of Turkey's occupation of almost half the island has been THE key issue in the elections.

Say no to the sell out of our land! the constitution wasnt enought 49 years ago we were blind then accepting a suicidal constitution by the snake named britain! I'm glad at least this time the greek population of Cyprus rejected another suicidal constitution made by the same people lthat created the one in 60's.

Cyrpus was is and always will be greek. A big thanks to Papadopoulos that stood alone against all of the major powers of our time in his attempt to save the Hellenism of the island! He might have been a complete bastard in his whole political cariere but at least in his last act as a politician he did what the blood that run inside his veins ordered him to do.

The only accepted solution is the one that the turks of the island remove the turkish troops and immigrants and then accept their minority status. Nothing makes the turks better than any other minority in the island to have the right to veto the majority of the island. Left wingers of cyprus wake up! Being a left winger doesnt mean deleting your history and identity.
