MY FAVORITE JAZZ VOCALISTS (FEMALE)
HORS CONCOURS: Ella Fitzgerald
1st place: Sarah Vaughan
"The Man I Love" is a popular standard, with music by George Gershwin and lyrics by his brother Ira. Originally part of the Lady Be Good! as "The Girl I Love"
Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, and Lena Horne recorded versions of this song, as did Ella Fitzgerald for Ella Fitzgerald Sings the George and Ira Gershwin Songbook (1959). On this version, Ira Gershwin commented, "I didn't realize our songs were so good until Ella sang them". Hazel O'Connor recorded a version for her Smile album in 1984.
Sarah Lois Vaughan was an American jazz singer, described by Scott Yanow as having "one of the most wondrous voices of the 20th century.
Nicknamed "Sailor" (for her salty speech), "Sassy" and "The Divine One", Sarah Vaughan was a Grammy Award winner. The National Endowment for the Arts bestowed upon her its "highest honor in jazz", the NEA Jazz Masters Award, in 1989.
Recordings of Sarah Vaughan were inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, which is a special Grammy award established in 1973 to honor recordings that are at least twenty-five years old, and that have "qualitative or historical significance."
The hectic video clashes with the languid mood of the song.

If only George could have lived to hear this version, he would have recognized it as perfect.
You can't teach what Sarah had.
She was the best.
