I got out of school and I was feeling kinda down,
I thought I'd join the Army just to take a look around.
I went on down to the recruiter man
And that's when all my troubles began.

Well, I've been up, down and around
This country more than a couple of times,
But I never knew until I got into the Army
That thinking for yourself was a crime.

Get over here, stand over there,
Let's see your identification.
Shut your mouth, son, get back in line,
We're sending you to South East Asia.

Well, they gave me some shoes that hurt my feet
They gave me some food not fit to eat,
They told me that I wasn't fighting alone,
They sent me to Saigon and they stayed home.

Well, I've been up, down and around
This country more than a couple of times,
But I never knew until I got into the Army
That thinking for yourself was a crime.

Get over here, stand over there,
Let's see your identification.
Shut your mouth, son, get back in line,
We're sending you to South East Asia.
All right.

One, two, three, four,
We don't want your fuckin' war,
A, B, C, D,
Get someone else, hey don't get me,
Left, right, left, right,
You know the whole damn thing puts me uptight.

I done my duty and I fought my fight
And I thought I knew I was doing right,
But that's all over, I'm free at last,
An' if they want any more, they can kiss my ass.

'Cause I've been up and down and around
This country more than a couple of times,
But I never knew until I got into the Army
That thinking for yourself was a crime.

Get over here, stand over there,
Let's see your identification.
Shut your mouth, son, get back in line,
We're sending you to South East Asia — like hell.

  • im 14, hippie and proud. protestors in the 60s inspire me. country joe, thank you. tomorrow im going to be on the side of the road holding a sign saying "STOP THE WAR BEFORE IT STARTS". This is addressing the US making war with Iran. sick, sick times. people say they want to be in the 60s and protest the war. well, you dont need to be in the 60s to do that. get out there and make a difference.

  • I really wish I could have been in this era to protest the wars and enjoy the music at the time.

  • @ModernDouches, I want to thank you and all vets for doing their part to protect our country. If you know your history you will find we have been fighting radical Muslims since the beginning of the USA. It ebbs and flows but we have always had a conflict with them. It's because of the Quran saying all infidels must die that they keep picking a fight. Better to fight them over there than here!

  • @TurningRedInAmerica the one's that were awake.

  • i leave next fathers day for boot camp so i can fight for my home. All i ask is for are fellow people support one of another in this fight.

  • my son just joined the air force so u can live free

  • The young will fight for the old.

  • @rickypwnz I've been saying this same thing for a while, and no one understands me. Thank you!

  • @rocknroll501 Same. Here.

  • @davidallenroth Yeah, it certainly would have.
