To me, it's like this....... John Mayer can do a great SRV/Jimi, but so can Kenny Wayne Shepherd and a bunch of other players, and they'll all sound different from one another. The point is Jimi and Stevie had SO MANY licks at their disposal that guys coming along now can take a handful of their licks and figure them out (which will take YEARS by the way) and do a suitable Jimi/SRV. Jimi Hendrix and SRV were, are and ALWAYS WILL BE in a class all by themselves!!!!!!!!

@MrYoter Yes, but what u are saying about mayer&shepherd with respect to jimi&srv is the same thing u can say about jimi&srv with regards to the 3kings, everyone builds off of there influences. Go listen to Man on the Side from Mayer's Any Given Thursday live album. It really opitimizes how these guy build there own sound off their influences. he starts off playing his version of SRV's Lenny, then breaks into his own song, it shows him taking a SRV style and making a mayer sound

@lovelydaize I believe it was rolling stone who said that mayer plays hendrix better than bendrix played hendrix, meaning his playing of jimi tunes are always more polished and technically perfect than when hendrix played them since his playing was more sloppy. Definitely not trying to say mayer is better than hendrix, just a funny anedcote from a music magazine that does show just how good mayer is at his jimi covers.

John mayer really gets down playing jimmy. There are a lot of great guitarists out there these days. saying one is better than the other is just impossible. Everyone has their own musical style and influences. so it's like comparing apples and oranges. some like em...some don't...john mayer does a good job here...no argument bout that....

@67goldtops uh, yeah. Clapton, Buddy, BB, Hendrix, Albert, Freddie, Jeff Beck, SRV are obvious. As for newer people, I am much more into people who use the blues principles in other more progressive ways such as Black Keys, Jack White, Mayer, Ben Harper and Frusciante, although I do still listen to more traditional players as well such as Bonamassa. The point that I did not agree with at all is when ericthemidgetdoll said Mayer is a joke in the guitar world, which is just incorrect

The only reason people don't want to say JM is as good as SRV and Jimi is because he's not dead yet.

Once he kicks the bucket, EVERYONE will say what a god he was and so on and so forth. Then Rolling Stone will put him in the top 10 or 15 guitarists, and we'll all move on to telling another guitarist how he doesn't come close to Hendrix, SRV and maybe even John Mayer.

It's the elite "dead guitar god club."
