"Scotland the Brave" (Scottish Gaelic: Alba an Aigh)
Scotland the Brave is also the authorised pipe band march of The British Columbia Dragoons of the Canadian Forces and is played during the Pass in Review at Friday parades at The Citadel. In 2006, it was adopted as the regimental quick march of the Royal Regiment of Scotland.
Lyrics:
The tune seems to have first appeared around the turn of the 20th century. However the lyrics were written comparatively recently by the Scottish journalist Cliff Hanley in or around the 1950s and matched to the tune as proposed by Clan Buchanan.
"Scotland the Brave" by Cliff Hanley
Hark when the night is falling
Hear! hear the pipes are calling,
Loudly and proudly calling,
Down thro' the glen.
There where the hills are sleeping,
Now feel the blood a-leaping,
High as the spirits
of the old Highland men.
Chorus
Towering in gallant fame,
Scotland my mountain hame,
High may your proud
standard gloriously wave,
Land of my high endeavour,
Land of the shining rivers,
Land of my heart for ever,
Scotland the brave.
High in the misty Highlands,
Out by the purple islands,
Brave are the hearts that beat
Beneath Scottish skies.
Wild are the winds to meet you,
Staunch are the friends that greet you,
Kind as the love that shines
from fair maidens' eyes.
Chorus
Far off in sunlit places,
Sad are the Scottish faces,
Yearning to feel the kiss
Of sweet Scottish rain.
Where tropic skies are beaming,
Love sets the heart a-dreaming,
Longing and dreaming for the homeland again.
"The Road To The Isles"
The A830, known as the Road to the Isles (although in reality it forms only a part of that historic route), is a road in Lochaber, in the Highlands of Scotland, which connects the town of Fort William to the port of Mallaig from where a ferry can be taken over the sea to Skye.
The road passes through several small settlements, including Corpach, Glenfinnan Lochailort and Arisaig and bypasses the village of Morar. Work Began in May 2007 on rebuilding the last remaining single-track section between Arisaig and Lochailort.
A far croonin' is pullin' me away
As take I wi' my cromack to the road.
The far Coolins are puttin' love on me
As step I wi' the sunlight for my load.
Chorus
Sure by Tummel and Loch Rannoch and Lochaber I will go
By heather tracks wi' heaven in their wiles.
If it's thinkin' in your inner heart the braggart's in my step
You've never smelled the tangle o' the Isles.
Oh the far Coolins are puttin' love on me
As step I wi' my cromack to the Isles.
It's by Shiel water the track is to the west
By Aillort* and by Morar to the sea
The cool cresses I am thinkin' of for pluck
And bracken for a wink on Mother knee.
The blue islands are pullin' me away
Their laughter puts the leap upon the lame
The blue islands from the Skerries to the Lewis
Wi' heather honey taste upon each name.
I have to come back every so often to watch this video because it is a fantastic show of what Scottish music should sound like - a man with his box and a small band backing him. The amount and style of the ornamentation is just right, the timing is bang on and the playing style overall just has that perfect bounce to it. Thank you very much for sharing this clip.
